Dear NUSD Community,

Although there are still nine days of summer vacation before school begins on August 21, it’s always a good idea to share a few details to help everyone get ready for the new school year!

Last year at this time I shared that student safety is a paramount priority on our school sites and that we would be focusing on systemic changes to enhance and increase student and staff safety. Here is a summary of what we put into place in 2024-2025 and will continue to implement and focus on in 2025-2026:

  • Cell Phone/Personal Devices on Campus
  • Anti-Hate Speech Protocols
  • Parent/Guardian Volunteer Requirements for on campus participation
  • Social Media Education and Awareness
  • Discipline Matrix
  • eBikes/eScooters

With a few slight modifications, NUSD is rolling out an updated dress code policy. It can be found here. More information will be coming directly to you from our site principals.

Our team is also pleased to share our work in regards to the academic program focus areas for this school year. The five main areas of continued focus are listed below. We plan to provide you with key progress points along the way. Teachers and administrators have been participating in key trainings in these areas throughout the summer.

  • Proficiency Based Education
  • Mathematics
  • Early Literacy
  • Interventions and Supports
  • English Learners

Look for more information from your site in the coming days.

We are all so excited to have students, staff and families back on our campuses soon. Thank you for your continued partnership,

Dr. Tracy Smith
